What happens after you choose a tariff
- Confirmation: You receive an email with your order summary and the cooling-off end date.
- Supplier checks: Your new supplier confirms details and, if needed for credit tariffs, may run a soft credit check.
- Meter readings: On or near the switch date you provide meter readings (or your smart meter does this automatically).
- Go live: The switch completes in as little as 5 working days under Ofgem’s faster switching. In many cases it can be next working day. Your old supplier sends a final bill based on your agreed readings.
- Direct debit: If you choose direct debit, your new supplier sets this up and confirms your first payment date.
If the market or price cap changes limit switching options, we will show the best available choices or let you know when better deals return.
How we calculate your quotes
Quotes are based on the tariff rates available in your distribution region and the usage details you provide. If you do not know your annual kWh, we estimate from typical consumption for similar UK homes. We then show:
- Estimated annual and monthly cost including VAT
- Standing charge and unit rate for electricity and gas
- Any exit fees, discounts or rewards the supplier publishes
We aim to rank tariffs by estimated annual cost, but you can sort by unit rate, standing charge or green content to match your priorities.
Disclosure: We may receive a commission when you switch through us. This does not increase the price you pay and does not affect the transparency of information shown.
Renewable and green energy options
Prefer a lower-carbon choice? Many suppliers offer 100% renewable electricity tariffs backed by UK Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin certificates, as well as carbon-offset or green gas options. We clearly label green tariffs so you can choose a plan that aligns with your values and budget.
What you need to get started
- Postcode
- Your current supplier and tariff name (if known)
- Annual usage in kWh or a recent bill estimate
- Payment method (direct debit, pay on receipt, prepayment)
- Meter type (smart meter, standard, Economy 7)
Understanding your quote
Key terms explained
- Unit rate: The price per kWh of energy you use.
- Standing charge: A daily charge that covers the cost of supplying your home, regardless of usage.
- Fixed tariff: Unit rates and standing charges are fixed for the contract term, but your total bill still varies with usage.
- Variable tariff: Prices can move up or down, usually in line with wholesale costs and the price cap.
- Exit fee: A charge for leaving a fixed deal early. Many variable tariffs have no exit fees.
- Economy 7: A two-rate electricity meter with cheaper night-time rates and higher day rates.
Tips to choose the right deal
- Match the tariff to your usage pattern, especially if you have Economy 7 or high night-time usage.
- Check exit fees if you want flexibility to switch again.
- Consider direct debit for potential savings and simpler billing.
- Look at total estimated annual cost, not just the unit rate.
- Prefer green energy? Filter for renewable electricity tariffs.
Frequently asked questions
Will my energy supply be interrupted when I switch?
No. Your gas and electricity keep flowing through the same pipes and wires. Only your billing and tariff change.
How long does switching take?
Switching typically completes in about 5 working days under Ofgem’s faster switching, and can be next working day with some suppliers. You always have a 14-day cooling-off period.
Do I need a smart meter to switch?
No. You can switch with a standard meter. If you have a smart meter, many suppliers can take readings automatically. Some suppliers may offer a free smart meter installation after you switch.
Are there any fees for switching?
We do not charge you to compare or switch. Some fixed tariffs carry exit fees if you leave early. We show these clearly before you apply.
Can I switch if I am on a prepayment meter?
Yes, there are tariffs for prepayment customers. Options can be more limited, and any existing debt may affect switching. We will show the best available choices for your situation.
What information should I have to hand?
Your postcode, current supplier, tariff name and annual kWh usage help produce the most accurate quotes. If you do not know your usage, use our estimator.
What about the energy price cap?
The Ofgem price cap limits the unit rate and standing charge on standard variable tariffs for typical usage. Fixed deals are not capped, but must comply with regulation. We reflect current rates when we calculate your quotes.
