EV Charger Installation FAQs
How long does a home EV charger installation take?
Most standard home installs take around 3–5 hours. More complex jobs—such as long cable runs, consumer unit upgrades or groundworks—can take longer. We’ll confirm timings in advance.
Do I need off-street parking?
Yes, home chargers must be installed on private property where the cable does not cross public footpaths. For flats or rented properties, you may also need the freeholder/landlord’s permission.
What power charger do I need — 7 kW or 22 kW?
Most UK homes have single-phase supplies, supporting up to 7.4 kW. 22 kW requires a three-phase supply, more common at commercial premises. We’ll assess your supply and recommend the right option.
Will you handle DNO notification?
Yes. We complete the required DNO notification after installation, and where pre-approval is needed (e.g., supply constraints or higher capacities), we manage that process for you.
What is load balancing and do I need it?
Dynamic load balancing monitors household demand and automatically adjusts charging current to prevent overloading your main fuse. It’s recommended where peak loads are close to supply limits.
What’s the difference between tethered and untethered?
Tethered chargers have a fixed cable for convenience; untethered use a separate Type 2 cable for a cleaner look and flexibility. We supply both styles.
Do EV chargers require their own RCD and DC protection?
Yes. Installations are built to BS 7671 and the IET CoP, using appropriate RCD protection and 6 mA DC fault detection (integrated or upstream) per the charger design.
Are your installations compliant with Smart Charge Regulations?
We install smart chargers that meet UK requirements, including default off-peak charging, randomised delay capability and secure connectivity. We’ll help configure these features at handover.
Can you integrate with solar PV and battery storage?
Yes. We offer compatible chargers and CT clamps to divert surplus solar into your EV. We’ll design settings to balance home loads, battery priorities and EV charging.
What warranty and aftercare do I get?
Hardware carries the manufacturer’s warranty. We provide installation certification and support if you ever need us. Warranty lengths vary by brand and model.
