Why energy prices vary by location across the UK
The Ofgem price cap sets the maximum unit rate and standing charge suppliers can charge on a variable tariff — but that cap is applied differently across 14 electricity distribution regions. Your location affects what you actually pay.
14 electricity distribution regions
The UK has 14 electricity distribution network areas operated by UK Power Networks, Northern Powergrid, Electricity North West, National Grid, SP Energy Networks, and Scottish and Southern. Network operating costs differ by region, which feeds into the unit rates and standing charges suppliers can charge in each area.
What this means for your bill
The same supplier and tariff can charge different rates in different regions. Comparing by postcode is the only way to see what you would actually pay. A comparison for Manchester produces different numbers to one for Brighton, even for the same tariff name.
How local energy comparison works
- Enter your postcode. Confirms your exact distribution region and the unit rates that apply to your address.
- Tell us about your home. Meter type, fuel type and payment method.
- We compare on annual cost. Unit rate times usage plus standing charge times 365 — a like-for-like comparison.
- Switch if you find something cheaper. Supply is never interrupted. Switching typically completes within a few working days.
