About Npower in the UK
Npower was a well-known domestic energy supplier in Great Britain for many years. Following industry changes and the acquisition of innogy (Npower’s owner) by E.ON, Npower closed to new domestic customers and its household customers were moved to E.ON Next. This migration was largely completed by 2021, and Npower is now part of E.ON Next. Today, E.ON Next provides service, billing, and tariffs for former Npower household customers, while the Npower brand continues in the UK for business energy as Npower Business Solutions (part of E.ON).
Key points at a glance
- Npower no longer supplies domestic energy; customers were migrated to E.ON Next.
- Former Npower smart meters and billing accounts were moved to E.ON Next systems.
- For new tariffs, compare current deals from E.ON Next and other suppliers with EnergyPlus.

Because Npower domestic no longer sells new tariffs, quotes are provided from E.ON Next and other active UK suppliers. Options typically include:
- Standard Variable Tariffs (price-cap regulated unit rates set in line with Ofgem’s cap)
- Fixed-rate deals for budget certainty over 12–24 months (may include exit fees)
- Prepayment tariffs for key/card or smart prepay meters
- Economy 7 (two-rate) tariffs for homes with night-storage heating or off-peak usage
- Green/renewable-backed electricity tariffs with REGO-backed supply
Final prices depend on your location, usage, meter type, payment method and the tariff you choose. Use our comparison above for an accurate quote based on your details.

Smart meters and Npower/E.ON Next
Many former Npower homes had SMETS1 or SMETS2 smart meters. As part of the migration to E.ON Next, most meters continue to work normally and may be enrolled into the national smart network (DSMF/DCC) where applicable. If your in-home display or automatic readings stopped after migration, contact E.ON Next to re-pair or update your device.
- Automatic readings mean accurate bills with no manual meter submissions
- Smart prepayment options for top-ups without visiting a shop
- Compatibility varies—your supplier can confirm the status of your meter
Moving home from Npower to E.ON Next
If you were an Npower domestic customer and moved home, your account is now handled by E.ON Next. To avoid estimated bills:
- Take final meter readings on the day you move out
- Provide your forwarding address to settle your final bill
- At your new home, note the opening readings and the current supplier shown on the meter/bill
Then use EnergyPlus to compare and choose a new tariff for your new property.
Prepayment customers
Prepay customers formerly with Npower should now manage their top-ups and support via E.ON Next. Most key/card meters can be topped up at PayPoint or Payzone outlets; smart prepay users can top up online or via app depending on the supplier.
- Emergency credit and friendly hours may be available on smart prepay
- Keep your key/card safe and report faults promptly
- Switching from prepay to credit meter may be possible subject to checks
Exit fees, price cap and billing (July 2026 update)
Where the price cap stands now: the Ofgem cap for April–June 2026 is £1,641/yr for a typical dual-fuel Direct Debit home (electricity 24.67p/kWh + 57.21p/day standing charge; gas 5.74p/kWh + 29.09p/day). From 1 July 2026 the confirmed Q3 cap rose 13% to £1,862/yr (electricity ≈26.11p/kWh + 57.19p/day; gas ≈7.33p/kWh + 29.04p/day). Fixing before 1 July can shield you from the increase.
- Exit fees: If you’re on a fixed deal, leaving early may incur an exit fee. Variable tariffs typically have no exit fee.
- Ofgem price cap: The cap limits rates on standard variable tariffs in Great Britain and is reset quarterly. It does not cap your total bill—your usage still matters.
- Billing and payments: Direct Debit often offers the lowest rates; alternatives include pay-on-receipt or prepayment.
For the latest cap level and guidance, see Ofgem: ofgem.gov.uk/energy-price-cap.
