What is a green energy tariff?

A green energy tariff helps you reduce your household’s environmental impact by matching your electricity use with electricity generated from renewable sources such as wind, solar and hydro. In Great Britain, suppliers evidence this by purchasing Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) certificates that verify a unit of power came from a renewable generator.

While electricity flows through a national grid mix, a green tariff ensures that the amount of renewable electricity we buy and put into the grid matches the amount you consume over time. This supports growth in UK renewable generation.

For gas, a green gas tariff may include a proportion of biomethane (produced from organic matter and injected into the gas grid) and/or the use of recognised green gas certificates (such as RGGOs) and credible carbon reduction projects for any remaining emissions. We publish transparent details for each tariff’s fuel mix and certification so you know exactly what makes it green.

Choose the right green tariff for your home

Fixed-price green tariff

Lock in unit rates and standing charges for 12–24 months for budgeting confidence. Your prices stay fixed for the term, but your usage will vary with how much energy you use. Exit fees may apply if you leave early.

Variable green tariff

Unit rates can go up or down with wholesale and network costs. No long-term commitment and usually no exit fees. We’ll always give you notice of price changes.

Economy 7/Economy 10

Off-peak electricity rates during night-time hours, ideal for storage heating or shifting usage overnight. Requires a compatible meter.

Smart time-of-use

With a smart meter, benefit from tariffs that reward shifting consumption to greener, cheaper times. Great for EV charging and flexible appliances.

Feature Fixed Variable Economy 7 Time-of-use
Price certainty High Medium Medium (two-rate) Varies by time
Exit fees Possible Usually none Possible Usually none
Smart meter required No No Two-rate meter Yes
Best for Budgeting Flexibility Night-time users EVs & flexible loads

How switching to a green tariff works

  1. Get your quote – Enter your postcode and a few details. We’ll show estimated prices based on your usage.
  2. Choose your plan – Pick fixed, variable or a time-of-use green plan that suits your lifestyle.
  3. Sign up online – Confirm your details. You’ll have a 14-day cooling-off period as standard.
  4. We handle the switch – No engineer visit is needed and your supply won’t be interrupted. You’ll simply start being billed by us.
  5. Install a smart meter (optional) – If you don’t already have one, we’ll arrange installation at no extra cost, subject to availability.

Good to know: Your power stays on throughout the switch. The process in Great Britain is regulated, and your current supplier will work with us to finalise your account and closing bill.

Pricing made simple

Your bill is based on:

  • Unit rate per kWh of electricity and gas you use
  • Standing charge per day to cover network and operating costs
  • VAT at the reduced domestic rate (currently 5%)

Prices vary by region, meter type and payment method. Where applicable, exit fees for fixed terms will be clearly stated before you sign up. If you’re on a prepayment or PAYG meter, we’ll show available green options for your meter type.

We’ll always present costs transparently and notify you in advance of any changes to variable rates. You’ll receive regular statements, and with a smart meter you can track usage more accurately to avoid surprises.

Our sustainability approach

Renewable electricity

We match the electricity our green customers use with purchases from UK and European renewable generators and associated REGO certificates. This market mechanism verifies the renewable origin of electricity and helps direct investment toward clean generation.

Green gas options

Where available, we include a proportion of biomethane and use recognised certification (such as RGGOs) to evidence green gas. For any remaining emissions, we may support credible, independently verified carbon reduction projects to balance the footprint. Full details are provided for each tariff.

Transparency

We publish a clear Fuel Mix and Environmental Impact statement each year so you can see exactly how our green tariffs are backed and what that means for carbon emissions.

Green energy FAQs

Are green tariffs more expensive than standard tariffs?

Not necessarily. Prices depend on wholesale markets, network costs and tariff type. Our aim is to offer competitive green tariffs with transparent pricing so you can choose sustainability without surprises.

Is the electricity I receive 100% renewable?

All electricity flows through the national grid, which carries a mix of sources. On a green tariff, we match the amount of electricity you use with purchases from renewable generators and associated REGO certificates over the year.

How does green gas work?

Green gas tariffs may include biomethane injected into the grid and recognised certification to evidence the green content. Where emissions remain, we may support credible carbon reduction projects. Specifics vary by tariff and are clearly documented.

Will my supply be interrupted when I switch?

No. Switching is seamless and regulated. Your energy keeps flowing, and we coordinate the changeover with your current supplier.

Do I need a smart meter?

You don’t need one for most tariffs, but a smart meter unlocks accurate bills, usage insights and access to certain time-of-use plans. If you don’t have one, we can arrange an installation at no extra cost, subject to availability.

Can renters switch to a green tariff?

Yes, if you pay the energy bill directly. Check your tenancy agreement for any supplier clauses. If your landlord pays the bill, ask them about switching the property to green energy.

What if I’m in a fixed contract with another supplier?

You can still switch, but your current supplier may charge an exit fee. We’ll show you potential savings and any fees in your quote so you can decide.

Do you support vulnerable customers?

Yes. We offer extra help for customers in vulnerable circumstances. Please see our Support page or contact us to discuss your needs.

What is a REGO certificate?

REGO stands for Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin. It’s a UK scheme that certifies electricity was generated from renewable sources, enabling suppliers to evidence and report the renewable content of tariffs.
