What affects your energy price?

Region

Distribution and network costs vary across Great Britain, so rates differ by postcode.

Usage

Your annual kWh consumption influences your quote. Accurate usage gives the most reliable comparison.

Meter type

Single-rate, Economy 7/10, smart meters and prepayment meters have different tariff options.

Payment method

Monthly Direct Debit often has lower prices than paying on receipt of bill; prepayment rates can differ.

Smart meters

Smart meters enable accurate billing and can unlock time-of-use or smart-enabled tariffs.

Tariff terms

Fixed terms, exit fees, paperless billing and green options can all influence the price you pay.

Upgrade to a smart meter

Smart meters send readings automatically and can show near real-time energy use via an in-home display. They help avoid estimated bills and can support more innovative tariffs.

Tariff FAQs

What is the Ofgem price cap?

The price cap is a set of rules from the energy regulator (Ofgem) that limits the maximum unit rates and standing charges suppliers can charge customers on standard variable tariffs and some prepayment tariffs. It is not a cap on your total bill; what you pay depends on how much energy you use. The cap level is reviewed periodically, typically quarterly.

Fixed vs variable tariffs: what’s the difference?

A fixed tariff keeps your unit rates and standing charges the same for the duration of the contract. A variable tariff can change rates, up or down, in line with market conditions and regulatory requirements. Fixed tariffs may include exit fees if you leave early.

Do I need a smart meter to join?

No, you can usually join with your existing meter, but some tariffs require a smart meter to enable accurate, automated readings or specific pricing structures. We’ll let you know during your quote if a smart meter is needed.

What is a standing charge?

The standing charge is a daily fixed amount that helps cover the cost of supplying your home (metering, maintenance, networks). You pay it regardless of usage, and it’s shown separately from your unit rates (p/kWh).

How long does switching take?

Switching can be as quick as 1–5 working days in many cases. Some scenarios (such as certain meter types or debt on a prepayment meter) may take longer. Your energy supply will not be interrupted during the switch.

Can I leave a fixed tariff early?

Yes, but exit fees may apply depending on your tariff and how long is left on your term. We’ll show any applicable exit fees clearly before you confirm your switch.

What information do I need for a quote?

Your postcode, email, the type of meter you have, and your typical annual kWh usage (from a recent bill) will help us give you an accurate price. If you don’t know your usage, we can estimate based on your home size.

Do you offer dual fuel and Economy 7?

We can quote for electricity-only, gas-only or dual fuel. Economy 7/Economy 10 options are available for eligible meters. Your quote will show what’s available at your address.
