Cheapest local energy tariff in my area (UK): what you can actually compare
When people search for the cheapest energy tariff in my area, they usually mean: “What’s the lowest annual cost I can get for my home, based on my postcode and how much energy I use?” That’s exactly how EnergyPlus compares tariffs.
Local pricing differs because electricity distribution regions (and sometimes supplier pricing strategies) change the unit rate (p/kWh) and standing charge (p/day). Your meter type (credit, prepayment, Economy 7, smart) and your usage can change which tariff is cheapest.
Tip: The cheapest deal isn’t always the lowest unit rate. A higher unit rate with a lower standing charge (or vice versa) can be cheaper depending on your usage.
What you’ll need (takes 2 minutes)
- Your postcode
- Whether you want electricity, gas or dual fuel
- Your meter type (if known)
- Your annual usage in kWh (optional—estimate if unsure)

How “cheapest tariff” is worked out in the UK
A home energy tariff is usually made up of two key parts. The tariff that looks cheapest on one metric can be more expensive overall once both are accounted for.
Unit rate (p/kWh)
What you pay for each unit of gas or electricity you use. This is where usage and time-of-use (e.g. Economy 7) can make a big difference.
Standing charge (p/day)
A daily fixed cost to cover network and supplier costs. Even low-usage homes can pay more if the standing charge is high.
Quick guide to tariff types
How switching usually works
- Compare by postcode and shortlist tariffs based on total estimated annual cost.
- Apply using your address and meter details (if available).
- Cooling-off period applies for most switches, giving you time to change your mind.
- Supply stays on during the switch—no disruption to your gas or electricity.
- Final bill from your old supplier and a new account with your new supplier.
Good to know: If you’re currently on a fixed tariff, check for exit fees before switching. If you’re on a standard variable tariff, you can often switch without paying exit fees.
Why local energy prices vary by area
Even with the same supplier, tariffs can differ across the UK. That’s because your costs include regional network charges and your local distribution area for electricity.
Electricity distribution region
Your postcode links to a region with different network costs. This can affect both the unit rate and the standing charge you’re offered.
Meter and payment method
Some tariffs price differently for smart meters, prepayment, Economy 7, or monthly direct debit—so “cheapest” depends on your set-up.
Supplier availability
Most suppliers cover most of the UK, but some tariffs may be limited or priced differently in certain regions or for specific meters.
Usage patterns
Low-usage flats often benefit from lower standing charges; higher-usage family homes may benefit more from lower unit rates.
If you rent: You can usually switch the energy supplier if you pay the bills, but check your tenancy agreement and ensure the account is in your name.
Common mistakes when looking for the cheapest local energy tariff
Comparing only the unit rate
Standing charges can outweigh a low unit rate—especially for low-usage homes. Always compare estimated annual cost.
Ignoring exit fees
Switching away from a fixed deal early can incur fees. Factor them into savings before you apply.
Choosing the wrong meter type
Economy 7 and prepayment tariffs can price very differently. If you’re unsure, choose “Not sure” and we’ll guide you.
Not checking contract end dates
You may be moved onto a higher-priced variable tariff when a fixed term ends. Set a reminder to compare again.
Forgetting direct debit preferences
Some deals assume monthly direct debit; paying on receipt of bill can change the price. Match the payment method you’ll actually use.
Not updating usage
Working from last year’s usage can mislead if your household changed (WFH, new baby, EV, heat pump). Update estimates when you compare.
FAQs about finding the cheapest local energy tariff
Is the cheapest tariff the same for everyone in my postcode?
Not always. Your postcode sets the regional network charges, but the cheapest tariff can still vary by usage, meter type (credit, smart, prepay, Economy 7), and payment method. That’s why comparing with your details is important.
Can I switch if I’m on a prepayment meter?
Often yes, but availability depends on supplier criteria and your meter set-up. Use the form above and choose Prepayment to see relevant deals for your area.
Will my supply be interrupted during the switch?
No—switching supplier does not mean your gas or electricity is turned off. Your energy is delivered through the same pipes and wires; only the billing supplier changes.
What if I don’t know my annual usage?
That’s common. You can leave usage blank and we’ll use a typical estimate, or you can find kWh on a recent bill (electricity and gas shown separately). For gas, the bill may show kWh already—use that if available.
Are “local tariffs” different from national tariffs?
In the UK, many tariffs are offered nationally, but the prices (standing charge and unit rates) can vary by region. When we say “local tariffs”, we mean the deals and prices available to your home in your region.
Do you include green energy tariffs?
Yes—where available. You can compare renewable-backed electricity options alongside standard tariffs and weigh cost vs preference.
