Energy tariff types explained
Understanding the differences helps you choose the best fit for your household and risk appetite.
| Tariff type | What it means | Good for | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed-rate | Unit rates and standing charge are fixed for a set term (e.g., 12–24 months). | Budget certainty and protection if prices rise. | May include exit fees if you leave early. |
| Variable-rate (SVT) | Rates can move up or down; usually linked to the market and subject to the Ofgem price cap for default tariffs. | Flexibility and no or low exit fees. | Bills can change when prices move. |
| Economy 7/10 | Cheaper night-time electricity, higher day rate. Requires multi-rate meter. | Homes using storage heaters or heavy night-time usage. | You’ll pay more in the day; ensure your usage profile fits. |
| Prepayment | Pay-as-you-go with a key/card or smart top-up. | Tight budget control and no unexpected bills. | Unit rates can be higher; risk of self-disconnection if not topped up. |
| Green tariffs | Backed by renewable electricity or carbon-offset gas. | Lower carbon footprint. | Check the supplier’s certification and fuel mix. |
| Time-of-use (smart) | Prices vary by hour or peak/off-peak windows; requires a smart meter. | EV charging, flexible appliances, load shifting. | Best savings if you can move usage to cheaper periods. |
About the price cap: The Ofgem energy price cap limits the unit rate and standing charge that suppliers can charge customers on standard variable tariffs. It does not set your total bill, which depends on how much energy you use. Fixed deals are not capped but must follow rules on fair pricing and transparency.
How switching works
-
1) Tell us about your home
Enter your postcode, current supplier and usage. We’ll estimate if you don’t know your kWh.
-
2) Compare your options
Filter by price, tariff type, contract length, green energy and payment method. See projected monthly and annual costs based on your usage.
-
3) Switch online
Apply in minutes. Your new supplier manages the process and contacts your old one. There’s a 14-day cooling-off period on most domestic contracts.
-
4) Keep the lights on
Your gas and electricity keep flowing throughout. The switch typically completes in 1–5 working days, depending on your circumstances.
Will my supply be interrupted? No. Switching only changes who bills you and the rates you pay — not the physical energy to your home.
What you’ll need to compare accurately
- Your postcode and current supplier/tariff name (from your bill).
- Your annual usage in kWh for gas and/or electricity (or we can estimate).
- Your meter type (single-rate, Economy 7/10, prepayment, smart meter).
- Preferred payment method (Direct Debit, on receipt of bill, prepayment).
Smart meters and time-of-use tariffs
Smart meters send readings automatically, so you only pay for what you use and can access innovative tariffs. Time-of-use deals can be cheaper if you shift usage to off-peak hours (for example, scheduling EV charging or appliances overnight). If you don’t have a smart meter, many suppliers can install one at no extra up-front cost as part of your switch, subject to availability.
Why prices vary by region
Network and wholesale costs differ across the UK, so tariffs in one area may be priced differently in another. Entering your postcode ensures we show deals available in your distribution region and the correct standing charges.
Moving home? Sort your energy in advance
If you’re moving, take opening meter readings on the day you leave and when you arrive at your new property. You’ll usually be placed on a deemed or standard variable tariff at the new address. Compare and switch as soon as you have your new postcode to avoid paying more than necessary.
More ways to lower your bills
-
Optimise your usage
Small changes add up: LED bulbs, draft proofing, and smart thermostats can reduce consumption without sacrificing comfort.
-
Choose the right tariff
If you value certainty, consider a fixed-rate deal; if you want flexibility, look at variable options with no exit fees.
-
Pay by Direct Debit
Many suppliers offer their best rates for monthly Direct Debit. Keep readings up to date (or use a smart meter) for accurate bills.
-
Match your meter
Only choose Economy 7/10 if enough of your electricity is used overnight; otherwise a single-rate tariff may be cheaper overall.
