British Gas business energy: quotes, contact number, rates & reviews
British Gas business energy is the business arm of Centrica and is the largest supplier of gas to UK businesses, serving everything from single-site micro-businesses to large multi-site portfolios. This page covers how to get a quote, how to reach them, how business pricing actually works, and what 350,946 Trustpilot reviewers say — checked 7 August 2026.
Get an British Gas business energy quote
Business energy is not price-capped and is not sold from a public rate card. Every quote is built for your site from your meter number, your annual consumption, your postcode, your contract length and your business’s credit profile — which is why two firms on the same street can be quoted different unit rates on the same day.
The practical way to judge an British Gas number is to put it next to the rest of the market for your exact meter. Tell us your details below and we’ll do that comparison for you — it takes about a minute and there’s no obligation.
Have your latest bill to hand: your MPAN (electricity) or MPRN (gas), your annual kWh and your contract end date will get you a far more accurate comparison.
British Gas contact number
Standard uk landline rate, included in most mobile bundles. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 8am–6pm.
Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately — it is free, staffed 24 hours a day and is not run by your supplier. If a meter is sparking or on fire, call 999.
Numbers and opening hours taken from British Gas’s own contact page and checked on 7 August 2026. Suppliers change these — check the supplier’s page before you call.
British Gas business energy rates
We don’t publish a headline British Gas business unit rate on this page, and you should be wary of any site that does. Business rates are quoted per site and are fixed on the day you sign — a figure published last month is not the figure you will be offered today.
What actually moves your rate:
- Annual consumption. Higher-usage sites are generally quoted lower unit rates but higher standing charges.
- Region. Distribution costs differ across the 14 UK regions, so identical businesses get different prices.
- Meter type. Half-hourly, non-half-hourly and smart meters are priced differently.
- Contract length. Longer fixes can smooth wholesale volatility but lock you in.
- Credit profile. A weaker business credit score raises the risk premium in the rate.
- Start date. Quotes are usually valid for days, not weeks.
British Gas business tariffs
Business supply generally comes in three shapes, and British Gas — like most UK business suppliers — quotes against your site rather than listing named public products the way domestic tariffs are listed:
- Fixed-term contracts. Your unit rate and standing charge are held for an agreed term (commonly 1–3 years). Budget certainty; an exit fee usually applies.
- Flexible or pass-through. Some elements track wholesale or network costs. Suits larger users who can manage the risk.
- Deemed and out-of-contract rates. What you pay if a contract lapses or you move into premises without agreeing terms — almost always the most expensive rate available, and the single biggest avoidable cost in UK business energy.
Green supply is worth asking about explicitly: ask whether electricity is backed by REGO certificates and request the fuel mix in writing, rather than relying on a marketing label.
British Gas business energy prices: what to check
The Ofgem price cap does not apply to business energy, so nothing stops an out-of-contract rate running far above what you would be quoted on a new contract. When you compare an British Gas price with anyone else’s, compare the whole cost, not the headline:
- Unit rate AND standing charge together — a low unit rate with a high daily charge can cost a small site more overall.
- VAT. Most businesses pay 20%, but low-usage sites may qualify for 5% and CCL relief.
- Climate Change Levy, unless you are exempt or below the de minimis thresholds.
- Contract end date and renewal window — diarise it, because rollover is where businesses lose the most money.
- Exit fees and what happens if you move premises.
Prices quoted anywhere on the open web are indicative at best. The only number that matters is the one quoted against your meter today — compare yours here.
British Gas Trustpilot score
Worth knowing when you read any supplier’s score: British Gas operates a claimed Trustpilot profile and invites customers to review, which tends to lift the average compared with suppliers whose reviews are left spontaneously. Read the 1-star reviews as well as the average.
British Gas reviews: what customers say
Trustpilot’s own summary of 58,831 recent reviews reports that reviewers overwhelmingly describe a good experience, most often praising efficient, thorough work and engineers described as professional, polite and knowledgeable, with clear explanations and timely arrivals.
The counterweight is the 20% who leave one star. Across UK energy suppliers the recurring themes in negative reviews are billing and account transfers, meter reading disputes and delays resolving complex cases — and business customers in particular should check how a supplier handles change of tenancy and final billing, because that is where business disputes usually start.
Our view: a review score tells you how a supplier behaves when something goes wrong, and it is a genuinely useful signal. It tells you nothing about whether their price is right for your site. Use both — the score to judge service, and a live comparison to judge cost.

British Gas is the business arm of Centrica plc. For a business energy buyer the useful questions are not about brand history but about how a supplier behaves day to day: whether you get a named account contact, how quickly billing queries are resolved, and what happens at renewal. The Trustpilot data above is the best public proxy for that, and the sections below cover the contractual mechanics that actually cost money.
Are you a microbusiness? It changes your rights
This matters more than most buyers realise. Ofgem gives microbusinesses extra protection, and you qualify if you meet any one of these:
- Fewer than 10 employees (or full-time equivalent) and annual turnover or balance sheet no more than €2 million; or
- Uses no more than 100,000 kWh of electricity a year; or
- Uses no more than 293,000 kWh of gas a year.
If you qualify you are entitled to clearer contract terms, a published renewal notice, broker commission disclosure on request, and access to the Energy Ombudsman if a complaint is not resolved. Most independent shops, cafes, salons and small offices qualify on the usage test alone — so check before you accept any renewal.
How switching business energy works
- Find your contract end date. It is on your bill or renewal letter. Start comparing three to six months before it — many suppliers price that far ahead, and leaving it late is what lands businesses on deemed rates.
- Get your meter numbers. Your MPAN for electricity (13 digits, printed in a grid on your bill and sometimes called the supply number) and MPRN for gas (6–10 digits). Quotes without them are estimates.
- Compare on total annual cost — unit rate plus standing charge across a full year, not the headline rate.
- Accept and sign. Business contracts are usually binding on acceptance: there is generally no 14-day cooling-off period for businesses, unlike a domestic switch.
- Your new supplier runs the switch. Typically a few weeks. Your supply is never interrupted and nobody needs to visit. Submit a meter reading on the switch date.
- Your old supplier issues a final bill. Keep paying until it settles.
You cannot switch mid-contract without paying any termination charge that applies — but you can agree your next contract during the renewal window so it begins the day the current one ends.
Complaints and your right to escalate
Complain to British Gas first, in writing, and keep a record. If it is not resolved within eight weeks — or you get a deadlock letter sooner — you can take it to the Energy Ombudsman free of charge. Its decision binds the supplier, not you.
Microbusinesses have this right. Larger businesses generally do not, which is another reason to check which side of the threshold you sit on.
If a broker arranged your contract they must belong to a qualifying Alternative Dispute Resolution scheme, and microbusinesses can ask them to disclose the commission built into the unit rate.
Trustpilot figures, contact numbers and opening hours were checked on 7 August 2026 from public sources (British Gas’s own website and Trustpilot).
