British Gas contact number, email and opening hours
The quickest ways to reach British Gas — and what to do if they can’t sort it out.
Reach British Gas
British Gas routes contact through its own help pages and live chat, which show the correct line for your account type.
EnergyPlus is not British Gas and is not affiliated with them. We are an independent UK energy comparison site. We publish these details so you can reach your supplier directly — and so you can check whether you are still on a fair price while you are here.
Why we don’t list a British Gas phone number
We publish a number only when we can read it from the supplier’s own site and date it. For British Gas we can’t: the numbers circulating on third-party sites disagree with each other and some are discontinued, so anything we printed could send you to a dead line while you are trying to sort out a bill. The link above always goes to their current details.
British Gas does not publish its phone numbers in a machine-readable way, and the numbers circulating on third-party sites contradict each other — some are discontinued. Rather than print a number that might route you nowhere, we link straight to British Gas’s own contact page, which shows the right line for your account type and is always current.
Emergencies — do not phone British Gas
Gas leaks and power cuts are handled by the national emergency and network services, not by your supplier. These numbers are the same whoever you buy energy from.
| Smell gas, or a gas leak | 0800 111 999 | National Gas Emergency Service, 24 hours |
| Power cut | 105 | Free, connects you to your local network operator, 24 hours |
| Meter sparking or on fire | 999 | Emergency services |
If British Gas can’t resolve it
Complain to British Gas first and ask for a complaint reference. If it is still unresolved after 8 weeks, or you receive a “deadlock” letter before then, you can take it to the Energy Ombudsman free of charge. Their decision is binding on the supplier if you accept it. Ofgem sets the rules suppliers must follow but does not handle individual complaints.
While you’re here — are you still on a fair price?
Most people calling their supplier are doing it because something has gone wrong with a bill. It takes about two minutes to check what British Gas would charge you now against the rest of the market, on your own postcode and usage.
