How to read the tracker
- A year is unit rate multiplied by your kWh plus 365 days of standing charge, for each fuel. Change the kWh boxes to your own figures (they are on your bill) and every price re-calculates.
- Fixed means the unit rates and standing charges are locked for the contract length shown; you pay the exit fee if you leave early. Variable tariffs follow the cap; tracker tariffs follow wholesale prices or the cap on a set formula and can go up as well as down.
- vs cap compares each tariff with Ofgem’s capped rates for the same region and usage: the price of doing nothing. A fixed deal below the cap protects you from the next rise; a deal above it is only worth it for a specific feature.
- The chart shows the cheapest new fixed tariff launched each week since March, so you can see whether suppliers are pricing new deals up or down against the cap. A rising line means waiting is unlikely to find a cheaper fix.
The snapshot is taken for a dual-fuel household on Direct Debit with a single-rate electricity meter. Economy 7, prepayment and electricity-only prices differ; the comparison handles those on your actual meter.
FAQs
How often is the tracker updated?
Every morning. We take the full list of tariffs our comparison can switch a household to, for each of the fourteen regions, priced at Ofgem’s typical usage, and store it as that day’s snapshot. The date at the top of the table is the snapshot date. Prices can move during the day, so the comparison always shows the live figure for your postcode.
Why do prices differ by region?
Standing charges pay partly for the local electricity and gas networks, and those costs differ by distribution area, so the same tariff costs a different amount in Yorkshire and in London. Unit rates vary by region too, by less. The tracker prices every tariff on the rates for the region you pick.
What does “vs cap” mean?
The difference between that tariff and a standard variable tariff at Ofgem’s capped rates for the same region and usage. A negative figure means the tariff is cheaper than the cap. Sign-up credits from some suppliers are on top and are not included here.
Is every tariff on the market here?
No. The tracker shows tariffs that can be switched to through our comparison, which is what makes the prices verifiable: each one is a live quote, not a scraped rate card. Tariffs only sold to existing customers, and prepayment or Economy 7 versions, are not in this view.
Where does the launch history come from?
From our own tariff database, which has recorded every version of every tariff in the feed since 21 March 2026 without overwriting earlier versions. For each week we take the cheapest fixed tariff that first appeared that week, priced for a typical London household. It shows the direction of new fixed deals; it is not the cheapest deal that was on sale on a given day.
