Step 1: compare before you commit
Octopus wins awards for service, but the cheapest deal for your postcode and usage changes week to week — sometimes it’s Octopus, sometimes it isn’t. Two minutes on a whole-market quote with your real usage tells you exactly where today’s Octopus deals (12M Fixed, Flexible, Go) sit against everything else. If Octopus tops your list, carry on below with confidence.
Steps 2–4: the switch itself
2. Have three things ready: your postcode, an idea of your usage (a recent bill helps, or your monthly spend), and how you pay. You do not need your old supplier’s permission or a meter visit for a standard switch.
3. Apply. Pick the Octopus tariff from your comparison results and complete the application — a few minutes. Octopus then handles everything with your old supplier, including the handover date.
4. The switchover (≈5 working days). Your supply never stops — nothing physical changes. On the switch date you’ll be asked for opening meter readings (automatic with a smart meter); your old supplier issues a final bill and refunds any credit.
After the switch
Set up your online account or app, check your Direct Debit level matches your real usage, and once you’re in, keep an eye on Loyal Octopus at renewal — the existing-customer fix that’s often cheaper than the open deal. If you have an EV, ask about moving to Intelligent Octopus Go once your meter is confirmed working half-hourly.

Your questions answered
How long does it take to switch to Octopus Energy?
A few minutes to apply and typically around five working days to complete. Your supply is never interrupted.
Do I need to tell my old supplier I’m leaving?
No — the gaining supplier manages the whole switch, including notifying your old supplier and agreeing the handover date.
Will I be double-billed during the switch?
No. Your old supplier bills up to the switch date and your new one from it; any credit on the old account is refunded after the final bill.
Do I need a smart meter to join Octopus?
Not for standard tariffs. Smart-meter-dependent tariffs like Agile, Go and Intelligent Go need a working SMETS2 meter — Octopus can usually install one after you join.
Can I switch if I rent?
Yes — if you pay the energy bill, you have the right to choose the supplier. Check your tenancy agreement for any notification clause.
